as you want. so thursday at 11:00 a.m. out of the blue, governor rick snyder of michigan announced a press conference at which he reversed his long held and very publicly held stance against changing union rights in his state. that was at 11:00 a.m. on thursday. an hour and a half later, by 12:30 p.m., the capitol police had shut down the capitol building, sealed off the building so protesters and members of the public could not get in. by 3:15, bills to strip union rights in the state were taken up in both chambers of the state legislature. by 4:00, there was a court order to reopen the state capitol to let the people in again. but before 5:00, before an hour was up, the house had already voted it through. then before 8:00, the senate had voted it through as well, and it was done. it was done, all in one day that didn't even start until an hour before lunch time. all in one day between 11:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., start to finish. and tomorrow, after a very minor amount of house keeping in the legislature, governor rick snyder says he is going to sign it. it's not like this is what t

the rights of unions. in fact, it was exactly that kind of scene michigan governor rick snyder, a republican, had said he wanted to avoid. in february, governor snyder looked at those other midwestern states with republican governors and workers protesting in the state capital and decided he did not want that thing in michigan, not in his historically very strong union state. governor snyder said, "you look at now that they've had those things happen, do they have a productive environment to solve problems? not necessarily. they're still overcoming the divisiveness, the hard feelings from all of that." at the time reporters wanted to know whether rick snyder would support what is known as a right to work law. the idea of right to work is simple. under a right to work law, employees of a union shop don't have to pay union dues. the employees get the benefit of the union, the higher wages and better health care, all of that, but they do not have to pay for it. why pay money if you can have something for free? for unions, the results of this are close to catastrophic which is why republicans an

unions from requiring members to pay dus. without hesitation earlier this evening, governor snyder signed the bill into law. there is a simple reason that laws like the one signed earlier are bad policy and bad economics. there's nothing wrong with a tough negotiation between a governor and labor unions or between a ceo and his workers. economic reality has to drive such negotiations. when i was governor, i negotiated hard but change the rules so workers cannot be effectively represented by a union takes away a fundamental right of workers to be represented on matters central to their economic well-being. it is one thing to be tough in negotiations, it is quite another to destroy the capacity of the union to negotiate at all. by slowly bleeding funds away from the union that's exactly what these bills do. this is not about helping the state in tough economic times. it is about destroying the unions. this is what president obama rightly said in detroit yesterday. >> obama: these so-called right-to-work laws they

. it's a replay of what happened in wisconsin. governor rick snyder, backed by the koch brothers is attempting to bust unions in the state where the modern labor movement began. on thursday, michigan republicans rammed through right-to-work legislation. it prohibits paying union dues as a condition of employment, but won't apply to existing union contracts. the bill is expected to pass next week. this is a complete political stealth attack by governor snyder. he never campaigned on a right to work law and the bill passed with little or no debate. that's what is infuriating people. republicans used a dirty trick to avoid a recall vote on the law. they included spending in the bill because laws with spending can't be overturn bade citizen vote such as a referral. so this sneak attack on labor has people in michigan absolutely outraged. took a lot of calls on it on the radio show. protesters stormed the capital on thursday. police used pepper spray on protesters and eight arrests were made. meanwhile, governor snyder claims his right-to-work law isn't bad for unions. >> i do not vie
